Here is another photo from our time on Isla Mujeres, which is a lovely place.
It’s called Isla Mujeres (island of women) because in Mayan times, it was considered a sacred place in connection with the goddess of childbirth, Ix Chel. When the Spanish arrived, they called it Isla Mujeres because of the numerous statues depicting her.
While the poverty in Mexico was very saddening, I found the best part of the trip to be the upbeat spirit of everyone there, almost in spite of, or because of, the poverty. I felt this picture kind of shows that vibrancy. It was an important reminder.
